Evolution

oil on canvas, 29"x37"

Evolution (above) was inspired by the car culture in contemporary society. The central character is based on a well-known English television personality who promotes the car as a fashionable extension of blind materialistic ambition. The term 'evolution' is used as a metaphor for the way that we have become so heavily reliant on personal transport as a means to no end.

A Day Out with the Presleys

Influenced by Hogarth's 'The Harlot's Progress', The Starlet's Progress (above) is a set of six consecutive paintings reinterpreting the misadventures of a young woman seeking opportunity and excitement in London.

(i), Moll Starlet comes to London to celebrate the success of her A'levels and is spotted by the director Michael Loser's talent scout, Sharon Needham.

(ii) After appearing in her first C-movie, she moves in with popular musician, Neil Malaga, who unfortunately O.D.'s at their flat-warming party the next week.

(iii) Bewitched by the champagne-cocaine lifestyle, Moll begins to entertain prestigious clientele in her appartment, and is caught in flagrante with "man of the people", the right hon. Hugh Janus, M.P. for Bendham South.

iv) Incarcerated more by scandal than by deed, Moll is burdened by the fruits of her labour.

v) Paroled to a life of hopeless narco-squalor, Moll is saved at the last minute from a lethal overdose.

vi) Financed by an advance from a publishing company, Moll detoxicates at a California Clean-out Center, meets the multi-billionaire, the Rev. Henry J. P. Preacham Jnr, and appears in London on the "Good Morning with Punch and Judy Show" to promote her autobiography, My Life, My Struggle.
