ACT (Double CD £15.00/£12.76)
ACT60002;Various Lost Blues Tapes / More American Folk Blues Festival 1963-1965. Launched in October 1962 as a speculative venture by German jazz promoters Horst Lippmann & Fritz Rau, from the off the AMERICAN FOLK BLUES FESTIVAL (AFBF) became a hugely successful annual event (the first series of tours lasting until 1972) introducing German, French and British audiences to a wide range of US blues originators, from elderly country blues performers and late 1940s stars to the cream of the Chicago blues scene who were still then in their prime. The tours were resumed from 1980 to '85 but with less impact as many of the 'great names' had by then passed away. All tours, except apparently the 1968 one, were recorded at a least one of the concerts, with some portions also filmed. Originally each year's tour was represented by an LP release but the recordings on this double CD (for the price of one) did not see light of day until first being issued by ACT in Germany as two full priced CDs in 1992. They were also included in a 1995 US 5CD set of AFBF performances. As far as we're aware they have never been officially available in Britain, and certainly not at this price. Disc one is a live 1963 concert; disc two is of studio quality recordings, probably from rehearsals for shows in 1963, '64 and '65. Universal has recently issued two highly acclaimed DVDs of previously unseen footage of the AFBF 1962-1966, rekindly much interest in these historic tours. This double delight is an equally resonant reminder of the great feast of blues performers that visited Europe in the 1960s.
JSP (4CD Box £20.00/£17.02)
JSPCD7731; Various Bluegrass Early Cuts 1931-1953: Classic Recordings Remastered. 96 tracks over 4 CDs providing a potted history of the roots and development of Bluegrass music. Most forms of music change to the point where in the course of time they become almost unrecognisable.Contemporary Jazz, Blues and Rock styles, for instance, bear little relation to earlier forms of the genres. There is much more continuity in Bluegrass, a style of music in which modern groups and musicians still pay homage to the recordings and music of their predecessors. This collection highlights the recorded works of pioneer Bluegrass artists and also those who may have influenced them. It is basically a journey back in time but where most collections choose to commence with the earliest items and work forward this one does things the opposite way round. The first two CDs and a part of the third concentrate on bluegrass recordings from the 1940s and early '50s; the remainder of the set covers artists from the 1930s and early '40s who many scholars consider to have been an influence on the earliest Bluegrass performers. A detailed accompanying essay tells the story with biogs of the featured artists.

Mel Torme Jazz And Velvet - Mel Torme, known as "The Velvet Fog" was a true original and the model of everything a jazz singer should be. With superb diction, impeccable taste in material, a highly developed sense of rhythm and beautiful high baritone voice he became a radio and recording star in his own right but his talents also stretched to arranging, writing music as well as books and TV & Radio. However, it's as a singer that he's most fondly remembered and it's the early part of his singing career that this 4CD set concentrates on, including his renditions of standards and popular songs, still held up as the definitive versions by many a jazz authority. PROPERBOX75; Various Swinging Hollywood Hillbilly Cowboys. This 4 CD set tells the story of music and people who moved from one corner of the US to another - namely the southerners who relocated to the West Coast in the 30s and 40s, bringing country music along with them. On the way they created not only new music but films glorifying the cowboy lifestyle and a new record company (Capitol) sprang up to put out all the songs. Artists such as Tennessee Ernie Ford and Cliffie Stone epitomised the trend and the tracks collected together on this set, along with the authoritative liner notes tell the story of the great move west and of a time before country automatically meant Nashville.
PROPERBOX74; Ella Fitzgerald Romance And Rhythm. The first half of Ella Fitzgerald's stellar career is represented on this 4CD set, from her beginnings as singer with Chick Webb's Orchestra, via her own big band leading days and duets with the likes of Louis Armstrong & Louis Jordan to her emergence as the queen of scat in the 1940s and her first set of Gershwin songs, made with pianist Ellis Larkins. As the First Lady Of Song, Ella's career is also a history of the development of jazz singing - she practically defined the idiom from the 40s to the 50s - this is an essential jazz document. PVCD 138; Zoot Sims Swing King - While he may not have been an innovator per se, Zoot Sims was one of the hardest swinging yet most lyrical players on tenor sax. As a member of Woody Herman's legendary "Four Brothers" band, Sims was in company with other players who followed in the wake of (and took their inspiration from) Lester Young, and his playing as his career went on followed this path more and more. This 2CD set presents some of the finest moments from the start of his career, drawing on recordings made with the Herman band, Stan Kenton and with small ensembles. Throughout one is struck by the taste and poise of his playing, but above all by its swing.
PVCD 139; Buck Clayton Swingin' With Buck - An excellent bandleader and accompanist for many vocalists, including Billie Holiday, Buck Clayton was a valued trumpet soloist with Count Basie Orchestra during the '30s and '40s, and later was a celebrated studio and jam session player, writer, and arranger. His tart, striking tone and melodic dexterity were his trademark, and Clayton provided several charts for Basie's orchestra and many other groups. This 2CD set presents the best of his work with Basie and the first of his famous Jam Session recordings from the '50s and is presented with a fully illustrated booklet and discography.
