JSPCD7729; Uncle Dave Macon Classic Sides 1924-1938 In the realms of Old Time Music, Uncle Dave Macon was a larger than life character who recorded performances that sound as vibrant now as they did when first committed to wax. His repertoire was vast, ranging from American ballads and string band numbers to folk songs that would have come from the British Isles. It also included social and political comments on topics of the time, such as "The Bible's True", about the John T. Scopes 'evolution' trial of 1925, and "Governor Al Smith", a song supporting Alfred E. Smith, a democrat, who in 1928 ran on the anti-prohibition ticket. Macon had a number of appellations, 'The Dixie Dewdrop', 'The Squire of Readyville' and perhaps the best known, 'The First Star of the Grand Old Opry'. The man who mc'd proceedings on the Opry would introduce Uncle Dave by saying "Here he is friends, with his gold teeth, plug hat, chin whiskers, gates ajar collar, three banjos and a million dollar Tennessee smile. Those words are a fitting introduction to this collection of 100 of Uncle Daves finest recordings.
JSPCD7728 ; Lowell Fulson 1946 To 1953: The Early Recordings Of One Of The Biggest Talents In The Blues
Although perhaps not as familiar a name to the average buyer as, say, B.B. King or John Lee Hooker, Lowell Fulson (1921-1999) was a substantial figure in the world of blues and, to some extent, soul music. His 50+ year recording career included such milestones as helping to launch a then unknown Ray Charles on the road to success, giving B.B. King one of his first major hits ("Three O'Clock Blues", Fulson's original included here), penning a major R&B hit in the mid '50s - "Reconsider Baby" - that would become a 'standard' recorded by all and sundry, including Elvis Presley, and originating a '60s soul/blues song that was also a hit for Joe Tex and Otis Redding with Carla Thomas. As American writer Bill Dahl has commented, "Few bluesmen managed to remain contemporary the way Lowell Fulson did for more than five decades. And fewer still will make such a massive contribution to the idiom".This handsome anthology, annotated by blues expert Neil Slaven, presents 113 tracks from the period when Fulson first emerged as a big name on the 'chitlin' circuit, including all of his early hits such as "Three O'Clock Blues", "Everyday I Have The Blues", "Blue Shadows", "Low Society Blues", "Sinner's Prayer" and "Lonesome Christmas"

SHANDV6317; Willie "The Lion" Smith Willie The Lion: A Musical Biography of Jazz Legend Wille "The Lion" Smith
One of the creators of a new stomping piano style known as 'stride', William Henry Joseph Bonaparte Bertholoff Smith (1897-1973) was a true American original: a captivating showman, a decorated First World War hero, a cantor in a Harlem synagogue, a teacher of young musicians such as Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, and a composer of over 100 songs including some of the most exquisite tunes in the jazz repertoire. His piano prowess and colourful personality made him a legend in Harlem. In the words of his protιgι Duke Ellington, he was "beyond category". This 57 minute DVD features over 20 songs and rare performance footage of Smith and Eubie Blake and is rich in anecdotes and stories of the likes of Ellington, Monk, James P Johnson, Fats Waller and Jelly Roll Morton.
